How to Ace Your Graduation Outfit

You did it! You’re about to turn your tassel as a newly minted grad and head on to your next adventure. You’ve taken the tests and written the papers, and now there’s only one question left to answer: What are you going to wear to commencement, one of the most photographed moments of your life? We’ve got the CliffsNotes solution below.

The Clothes

Remember that you’re dressing to complement, not overshadow, your gown. What does that mean?

  • Consider the length of your gown, and tailor your dress or skirt accordingly (aka no maxis, please).

  • Be careful when it comes to necklines – a high neck is fine, but skip something with any extra embellishments or busy patterns.

  • Look for something with pockets to carry staples like your phone and ID.

The Jewels

A lot of your accessories will be hidden under your gown during the ceremony, but don’t let that stop you from putting the finishing touches on your graduation outfit.

  • Stand out from the (literal) crowd with a pair of fun statement earrings.

  • Balance out the look by stacking on rings and letting a bracelet or two peek beneath your sleeve.

  • More delicate necklaces keep from overwhelming your neckline, or adding any bulk beneath your gown.

The Hair & Shoes

When we said we were going to help you ace your graduation outfit, we really meant it – from head to toe.

  • Beware of hat hair from your cap! Any elaborate styling like up-dos or major curls should be saved for another occasion.

  • Go for the comfortable shoes like wedges, short heels, and flats. Trust us, you do not want to be that girl limping her way across the stage.
