How to Make the Perfect Bouquet

Kendra’s love language? Definitely flowers. Both our office and her home are never without a few beautiful arrangements on display, always designed by Bonni Taylor, co-founder of both Posey and The Little Posey here in Austin. Because nothing says “I love you” like fresh blooms (except for jewelry, obvs), we tapped Bonni to create the Valentine’s Day floral arrangement of our dreams – and then she even taught us how to do it ourselves.

To honor the spirit of February 14, Bonni paired pink and orange blooms together to create an arrangement that doesn’t just read romance, but also friendship—the two pillars of any relationship. We love how its soft textures and lush volume make a statement without feeling overpowering.

Feeling inspired? Here’s how to create your own:

Step 1: Before developing a strong vision of what you want your arrangement to be, head to the market, find out what’s in season, and pick one or two flowers that really catch your eye.

Step 2: From there, you can start dreaming into the other blooms you want to use. To make your arrangement stand out, look for a variety of flowers in complementary tones and textures.

Step 3: Don’t forget about the greens! Not only do they provide natural contrast to your blooms, but they’re also wonderfully aromatic.

Step 4: After that, it’s about giving yourself time to play and design a Valentine’s Day flower arrangement that speaks to you. Let your creativity drive your creation!

Bonni’s Pro Tips

If you’re shopping for other things in addition to your flowers, make sure to pick them up last and minimize their time out of water.

When in doubt, get three times as many blooms as you think you’ll need (yes, you read that right – three).

As soon as you get home, recut your stems, put your flowers in fresh water, and keep them out of direct sunlight.
