When Kendra was interviewed by the super gorgeous and ultra chic blogger Merritt Beck of The Style Scribe, we were beyond excited! The Austin native who now resides in Houston has an eye for all things fashion and can even whip up a thing or two in the kitchen (see her latest recipe for Raisin Bran muffins…yum!) With the hopes of soon expanding the Kendra Scott retail family to Houston, we were tickled to have the opportunity to sit down and chat with one of H-town’s most fabulous fashionistas! Read on to find out more about Merritt and check out her amazing blog here.
{1} What is The Style Scribe?…The Style Scribe is a daily blog based on my personal style and what’s hot moment-to-moment in the fashion industry. It started as an anonymous hobby, and then a couple months into it I started getting contacted about working with vendors, commission programs and getting fun, free stuff from designers. It really has been an eye-opening experience and has shown me that if you follow your heart and do what you love, success is sure to follow. As far as what is on the blog, I do it all: outfit posts, designer interviews, colorful collages for shopping inspiration, and exciting event recaps. The only thing I have yet to try is a DIY post – I’m not the best with my hands… if you saw my handwriting you’d agree!
{2} Where do you find your inspirations?…To be honest, I really just find stuff I like and buy it (or in regards to the blog, post about it). I’d be lying if I said that I had this deep, thoughtful process of how I put my outfits and blog posts together. I believe fashion and personal style shouldn’t take a whole lot of thought – if you like it, you should wear it. While trends are obviously an influence on some pieces I choose to buy, my personal style is pretty concrete. I typically come up with an outfit and then follow with what I think it represents, not the other way around.
{3} What is your favorite trend for 2012?…I’m a color-nut, so I’m thrilled creamy pastels and vivid brights are back again this spring and summer! I’m also loving the abundance of floral prints I’m seeing on everything from mini-dresses to pant suits. I know this will contradict my previous statement, but I also love how designers are returning to a neutral, black, white and gray palette for fall/winter 2012. While the neon hues are ma-jor for spring and summer, they aren’t as easy to assemble or transition into other seasons. I’m thrilled that designers are providing pieces that are actually wearable and practical this fall.
{4} What’s one of your resolutions for the New Year?…Getting organized was #1, and I don’t just mean cleaning my room. The second I got back from my holiday in Austin I cleaned out and color-coded both of my closets, donated old clothes to Goodwill, created an inspiration board using a cork board from Container Store, and bought an awesome jewelry case to finally get all of my jewelry together in one place. I dusted, vacuumed and scrubbed my way into 2012, and I am so happy I did it. Now I can see all of my clothes and know that I have a lot more than I thought I did when so many pieces were hidden.
{5} Something on your 2012 bucket list…I’d love to have my blog (or myself) featured in a magazine such as Lucky, Glamour or Marie Claire. I know that might be a stretch since I’ve only had the blog for a year, but if 2011 taught me anything, it’s that if you want something badly enough, you’ll do just about anything and work harder than you thought you could to get it. It feels like I started the blog yesterday, and yet I am amazed at how fast it has grown and how many people now read and follow it! I’m so grateful for the support my friends, family and readers have given me over the last year.
{6} Name three of your Favorite places in Houston…For food, I’d have to go with Tiny Boxwood’s. It’s such a dainty little eatery with an amazing atmosphere (it’s attached to a nursery), beautiful décor and the most delicious food. Their breakfast/brunch is particularly divine (I suggest the yogurt parfait)! Oh, and don’t forget to try a chocolate chip cookie. You’ll never taste anything better. A cult classic in Houston, A Bientot, is one of my favorite places to buy pretty baubles, belts, and incredibly affordable pashminas. The prices of jewelry vary, but for the most part, it is budget-friendly and all of their pieces are spot-on trend-wise. And not to totally self-promote, but I am the Director of Public Relations and Marketing for Houston’s newest shopping concept, New For The Night, which launches in February. It’s a one-stop-shop for you to rent or buy the season’s hottest looks by your favorite contemporary designers. We’ll have a showroom in River Oaks as well as an online store and I couldn’t be more excited for the launch!
{7} What’s your perfect Valentine’s Day ensemble?…Over the holidays I found this magnificent red, pink and black Matthew Williamson mini dress half off at Scoop NYC in Dallas. My Valentine’s Day will be twice as exciting this year due to the fact that I’ll be in New York for fashion week. I definitely plan to wear the dress out on the 14th – my last night in town!
{8} Your guilty obsession…I’m such a shoe snob. I think the majority of money I spent on clothes last year was due to my serious shoe addiction. A pair of shoes can make or break an outfit, so I just try to buy as many awesome pairs as I possibly can. The more options, the better.
